Tutorial › Path 1: First draft
Unit 1: The project
In this unit, you open the example project and take a tour of the app.
Open the example project
- Open the Script Library: it is the page shown when no project is open; the "Project" block, at the top of the rail, brings you back to it.
- Touch "Open an example…", then First draft. A copy of the project opens, yours.
The welcome tour shows each page, bubble by bubble, on this same project. Follow it, or go on your own: it can be replayed from Settings › Preferences.
Read the Overview
The first page of the rail, Overview, opens here on the Tutorial panel: the missions of the path, ticked off as you do them.
Below it, the Overview is the film's identity card: title, authors, director, genres, picture format, intended running time, logline and summary.
- Read the logline: "Six astronomers board a shell fired from a giant cannon to explore the Moon."
- Look at the estimated running time: Gilgamesh calculates it from the screenplay (one page ≈ one minute) and, when a scene is played on the floor plan, from its action.
- Change the intended running time: it is your target, the estimate is compared with it.
This information makes the title page of the Bible and of the exports.
Find your way around the rail
The rail, on the left, sorts the pages into four groups, in the order of the work. On the first draft, it only shows the base; the other pages join it once they have content (see The rail).
| Group | Pages |
|---|---|
| Writing | Write (the screenplay, scene by scene), Organize (the treatment as sticky notes), Notes |
| Elements | Crossed Arcs, Characters, Locations, Props, Vehicles |
| Shooting | Floor Plan (floor plan, cameras), Cast (casting, sides), Scouting (places for the sets), Prep (shot list, breakdown) |
| Read and share | Share: the screenplay and the project documents (the Bible and its templates) as pages, the sent versions |
At the bottom of the rail: Search (Ctrl+K), project Versions, Settings, and the logo, which hides or shows the rail.
List and inspector
On the workshop pages, the list of elements is on the left and the inspector on the right. When an element is open, the list folds away: a second click on the active page, in the rail, opens it again. The inspector opens with the button at the top right of the page.
Next: Unit 2: Write a scene.
